Knowledge of Conventions
Learn common formats for different kinds of texts
This semester we wrote letters, presentations, blogs, formal papers, and articles. Pictured below is a letter that I wrote for a peer review during the process of preparing project three. However, when I wrote papers they were more formal but my blogs were written less formally similar to the peer review letters.
Control such surface features as syntax, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
We did not have a specific lesson on syntax, grammar, punctuation, and spelling but I did learn this skill along the way. This was a problem for me in our Rhetorical Ad Analysis project. I sometimes put commas in places that they are not needed. But I soon got a hang of it all when I began to read my papers aloud. Below is an example of my rough draft and final draft of the same paragraph for my project.
Rough Draft: “They used Aristotle’s three types of appeals to connect with their audience. The ethos in this ad is that the World Wild Life Fund is an organization that has been promoting global warming and its effect on not only humans, but mainly the animals of wildlife since the late 1900s. The WWF organization is therefore credible to promote this message because they have realized over many years that global warming is increasing. And because of their credibility the audience will become more attentive of the advertisement.”
Final Draft: “In this advertisement, the advertisers use Aristotle’s three types of appeals to connect with their audience. First, the ethos in this ad is that the World Wildlife Fund is an organization that has been promoting global warming and it effects not only on humans but also on the wildlife since the late 1900s. This establishes that the WWF organization is therefore credible to promote this message because they have realized over many years that global warming is increasing. It also implies that because of their credibility, the audience will become more attentive of the advertisement.”
Develop knowledge of genre conventions ranging from structure and paragraphing to tone and mechanics
In the “Best Of” project my tone was not as formal as my “Rhetorical Ad Anaylsis.” I was basically writing a movie review so I decided to be less formal. One reason was because I wrote about romantic-comedies which are very comical. Another reason is because I was writing about movies so, I had to be professional but the conventions were based on analyzing movies. In each of my writings I used the mechanics that fit the tone of the genre.
Example: “In life we make decisions every day. We have our easier decisions, such as going to school or staying home, staying in or going to that crazy house party, or cleaning our room when we can simply be lazy for the day. However, one of the hardest decisions, I think, a person can ever make is what film to choose for a group to watch on a movie night. Out of all the movie genres, I believe, that most enjoy romantic-comedies. These are the movies that center on ideals such as true love but have a humorous plot-line with obstacles that land the main characters in a happily ever after. Three romantic comedies that have sparked my interest areThink Like a Man, Friends with Benefits, and Bridesmaids.”
Practice appropriate means of documenting their work
Over this semester I learned to cite in hyperlink format. An example of this method can be seen below.
Hyperlink: “They go on a dinner date to celebrate his big move, and one date leads to many more. They begin to share their relationship problems, funny stories, and typical friend conversations. We all know that friends are the ones that are supposed to help you move on after a bad break up and this is exactly what they do for one another. However, they do not take the appropriate route when trying to help friends get over a past relationship, which leads them to label their friendship as “no strings attached.” This means they are not to catch emotional feelings for one another, no matter what activities they take part in (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/).”
