Letter From Birmingham Jail Rhetorical AnalysisIn the letter to the clergymen that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote from Birmingham jail, Dr. King uses rhetorical appeals and biblical allusions to defend his justification for the white churches and bishops not supporting what he considers unjust laws in the 1960s. The clergymen did not exactly state anything in their letter about the church supporting the laws, however, because it was the clergymen who wrote the letter about the actions they claimed were uncalled for, Dr. King made his feelings known about the wrong doings of the white church.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. uses logos and pathos appeal, and also a biblical allusion to warn the clergymen of the decline in the church that may occur in the future. "But the judgment of God is upon the church as never before. If today's church does not recapture the sacrificial spirit of the early church, it will lose its authenticity, forfeit the loyalty of millions, and be dismissed as an irrelevant social club with no meaning for the twentieth century. Every day I meet young people whose disappointment with the church has turned into outright disgust". Dr. King believes that the duties of the church are not being fulfilled. He is letting the clergymen know that they are allowing civil disobedience go on around them, and are not taking a stand against these situations. Dr. King concludes with the implication that the church will lose its true meaning and the believers will stop believing because of this. “But the judgment of God” and “forfeit” create an emotional appeal because God’s judgment is the most sacred judgment of all his people and the act of losing something because of wrongdoings is not the best feeling when you could have prevented it. Lastly, this quote has a biblical allusion to Paul in the bible because he did not allow sin to happen on his watch. Dr. King also uses pathos appeal and a biblical allusion to allow the clergymen to realize how they would feel if they were no longer accepted by their church, bishops, or fellow ministers, for believing in what was right. “Some have been dismissed from their churches, have lost the support of their bishops and fellow ministers. But they have acted in the faith that right defeated is stronger than evil triumphant”. This statement depicts a pathos appeal because it is an important aspect of Christian belief and act of having faith. It also creates an emotional appeal because MLK's statement also makes a biblical allusion to the story of Paul in the bible. Paul and members of the church were acting out their beliefs by spreading the Gospel in Galatians 1. Dr. King believes that being imprisoned for what you stand for is better than saying nothing at all. Through the use of rhetorical appeals and biblical allusions Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. set a tone of disappointment toward the clergymen in his letter. Reflection for Ad. Rhetorical AnalysisRhetorical Knowledge
Our first project assignment, the rhetorical advertisement argument, taught me how to break down an advertisement to discover its true message and also its faults. I learned how rhetorical strategies were used in the advertisement. Critical Thinking, Reading, and Writing The rhetorical advertisement did not require sources but it did require you to have some knowledge of the advertisement you chose or you would be someone that would have to do a some research over their advertisement. While writing this paper, most of my time was spent on finding out things to include without repeating myself because my ad was so direct. Knowledge of Processes For our first project assignment, my first draft was basically the complete flow of how I wanted my paper to be and all I would have to do is feel in the blanks for my final draft. My project turned out pretty good, I have not always been the best writer, so when I am able to get a lot done without any guidance, I feel really great. Knowledge of Conventions Our first major assignment taught me how to deeply analyze advertisements. It taught me that even though advertisements are able to be broadcast and promoted, they always don't meet the right criteria when you actually sit down and think about them. I had to pay close attention on not repeating myself and staying on topic, so I would not confuse my audience. Composing in Electronic Environments I have always been kind of tech savvy so writing this paper was not really an issue. However, when it came to posting the project onto my portfolio, I have never had to hyperlink all the sources used in my paper. Free Write: Movie ReviewIn life we make decisions everyday. We have our easier decisions, such as going to school or staying home, staying in or going to that crazy house party, or cleaning your room when you can simply be lazy for the day. However, one of the hardest decisions a person could probably ever make is what film they should watch on a movie night. Out of all the movie genres, I believe that everyone loves a romantic-comedy. These are the movies that center on ideals such as true love but have a humorous plot-line with obstacles that land them in a happily ever after. In these films there are typically two young lovers that are meant to be, yet there are complications such as family, friends, or previous relationships that are keeping them apart. And soon, they do find away to overcome these obstacles and become a happy couple.
So, if you are one of those people looking for a romantic-comedy to watch on movie night, there are two movies that I think would meet your entertaining needs but only one can be chosen. Think Like A Man starring Taraji P. Henson, Regina Hall, Meagan Good, Gabrielle Union, Michael Ealy, Romany Malco, Jerry Ferrara, Terrence J, and Kevin Hart is an amazing movie. In this movie the balance of power in four couples' relationships is upset when the women start using the advice in Steve Harvey's book, Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man, to get more of what they want from their men. However, when the men realize that the women have gotten a hold of their relationship "playbook," they decide that the best defense is a good offense and come up with a plan to use this information to their advantage. What I've Learned So Far..I've learned many things so far about the general topic for my review during my research. My topic is movies, it seems as though it would have been one of the easiest topics but maybe I am just making it hard on myself. I learned that it is quite hard when narrowing down the movies that you do want to review and rank, especially when the movies all have to kind of meet a certain similarity, such as actors, purpose, producer/director...and the list goes on and on. I have also learned that it is really hard to choose the movies that you want to review when it has been a while since you have last viewed them. I know I could simply just re-watch it, but the way my time is currently being wasted I do not know how well that will go. However, I will do what I have to do to get this project done, so I guess I'll be taking a look at some movies. Some conventions that I have identified about my topic is that when rating movies you have to state its rating, producers/directors, run-time, and also its genre. This information must be placed somewhere in your text and under the movie ad. Also the movie title must be italicized.
The criteria that I will use will be based on these things when ranking/comparing the movies: 1.Good Story: A great movie must have a good plot that tells both an intriguing and unusual story. 2. Suspense: Some element of the film must keep the audience on edge and make them eagerly anticipate a resolution. 3.Originality: The film must present some new concept or idea that has hardly been explored by its predecessors. Some amount of creativity and innovation should invent never-before-seen content. 3.Good Actors/Good Cinematography: No matter how great a job the writers did coming up with a story, it must be properly executed. The actors must convince the audience they are the characters they're portraying, and the camera crew must capture the scenes in a manner that best illustrates the story. 4.Profound Message: Within the story there should be brought to light a particular moral or ethic.* 5.Realism/Accuracy: A great film should portray events, people, etc. as they are in real-word settings despite controversial themes. Actions and interactions should be believable, plausible, and at least somewhat relatable. 6.Good Setting: The characters must be placed inside an environment that contributes to their actions and interactions while also emphasizing the themes and moods of the film. The scenery should be pleasing to the eye while not detracting from the main focus of the scene. 7.Soundtrack: I heavily subscribe to the adage "music is the language of the soul". Sound should compliment the visuals, but also help convey the emotion of each scene. If those two aspects contradict each other, diagetic and non-diagetic soundtracks should each support a separate element in opposition to the other. 8.Composition: Everything must be arranged in a comprehensive manner that upholds the story. 9.Special Effects: The film visuals must maintain a professional quality and stimulate the audience. Special effects should be used appropriately, when they compliment the emotion of each scene and support the setting. Reflection for Movie ReviewRhetorical Knowledge:
Our second project, "The Best Of", taught me how to format my paper similar to how a professional critic would rank his or her subjects. Through research I learned about the different conventions, criteria, and format of a standard movie review. Critical Thinking, Reading, and Writing: "The Best Of" assignment did not require any sources but it did require you to do a lot of research on the subject that you are ranking, which in my case were the movies that I chose to rank. I spent a lot of time deciding what movies were actually worth ranking and also what to keep or take away in my paper. Knowledge of Processes: For our second major assignment, "The Best Of", the first free write was not as helpful as it could have been to me. At the time I was not very clear of my thoughts or the format of writing movie reviews. On the actual Rough Draft I did way better. I knew exactly what to focus on and how I would show which movie was better than the other etc. My paper turned out really well, although the process could have been easier if I was more clear of what I needed to focus on when ranking movies. Knowledge of Conventions: Our second project taught me how to review movies correctly and also the criteria to base the reviewing upon. I had to make sure that I did not focus so much on the story-line but on the other aspects of movies such as the actors, director, visual effects, and soundtrack. If I did not focus on those topics, it would have been very hard to complete this assignment. Composing in Electronic Environments: I did not have many problems with the technology I used. One of the main problems I had was setting up the format on my website for my final draft. I was not sure how I was going to fit my visual aids onto my website but I soon figured it out. Kickstarter AnaylsisInnovator Michael Aylesworth, creates something that he believes all humans in some point in time may need, called Wave Hooks. Wave Hooks are a 3D printed modular design that organizes your vertical space for the home, office, and boat. Using the website Kickstarter, he is able to start a funding platform for his creative project. Kickstarter allows Aylesworth, to persuade his future backers to contribute to the expansion of his idea. Aylesworth uses visual aids and rhetorical devices to convey to his audience that Wave Hooks are worth investing in. The most popular product that Aylesworth is promoting are the wine glass holder and also the beer can holder. From the visuals that are pictured on his site, the audience is able to infer if this product is what they need in their possession. It also allows the audience to infer that this specific product is catered toward adults. Aylesworth uses these images of his product to target the adult audience that he is specifically looking for. Kickstarter also gives you permission to use a video to pitch your idea, and this is something that he takes advantage of as well. In Aylesworth’s video pitch, he goes further into detail describing what his product is and how it is used. Along with the pictures on the site, this video gives his audience a more clear reason as to why they should invest in this product. In his video Aylesworth demonstrates how each hook can be used and also how the hook will not fall off, even in an earthquake. He also gives a brief personal story about the wine glass holder, which is a way to grab the audience’s attention. This gives the audience something more to relate to. In addition to his story, he tells the audience how buying a product will invest in his equipment, the expenses, and what his working equipment consists of. This description gives the audience a sense of where their money will go to, which is a trusting factor for his business. He also uses rhetorical devices such as ethos, pathos, logos, and kairos to persuade his audience. Alyesworth uses ethos when he demonstrates how he uses his equipment, the stability of the hook, when he introduces the expenses and how the money will be spent. His ethos allows the audience to trust what he is saying, not only because you can see his body language in the video but his tone was very blunt and exciting. It seemed as though he loved and knew what he was talking about. He also uses pathos when describing a story as to why the adult audience may need to purchase a hook. He tells them that he loves nothing more than coming home after a hard day of work, slipping into the tub, and having a glass of wine. He adds that his product allows you to do this safely and conveniently because you have a holder attached to the hook. This is an emotional appeal because this is how he feels and many adults are able to relate to this message if they casual drink. He also uses logos to persuade his audience that his product is what you need because it helps you in various ways and he is able to demonstrate them in pictures, words, and also his video. The rewards of this project is that Alyesworth creates a safe way for adults to drink and enjoy their time specifically in a bathroom setting. Although, there are stakeholders in this situation. They consist of adults who may share the same bathroom with their children, teens who may want to purchase his products but are under the age of 21, adults who may not know that they are allergic to the manufacturer, and anyone who is against drinking in the bathroom setting. Also, some rebuttals of this project is that even though he did demonstrate that the hook would not fall even in an earthquake it was not an actual earthquake, that it is not safe to drink while you are bathing, and that there are projects similar that have not been sold in stores because of safety issues. LINK TO PROJECT: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/97033867/wave-hooks?ref=discover_pop Audience Analysis HeuristicMy kickstarter project will be directed to young adults, ranging from ages eighteen to twenty-five. Their environment, health, class, income, and race will not be a factor because we are appealing to all backgrounds. When concerning written discourse, the educational and cultural experience of some my audience may first seem as though they are being asked for money that may not be used for its full potential, and others may infer that we are trying to promote amateur artist but they would be wrong. However, “The Art of an Individual” is not aiming for just the money and promoting artist without professionalism, it is aiming to encourage young artist to never give up on their dreams by being the supportive group that will allow them to tell their stories, and inspire others to actually listen. Although the background of my audience is fully diverse, we do want to cater to a young adult who is accepting of who they are and their social status but is not afraid of improvement.
When talking about the subject matter of the project will know that I am asking for their monetary or simply just their support but they will not be so sure on how. The possible opinion of the reader would be how exactly I will be able to support if I do not have any funds to give, or why exactly would a project like this need funds. This opinion will not be really strong because they will later learn that the funds will go more toward equipment than anything else. The reason why he or she would react this way is because it is simple to just record videos on your phone and edit them now days, but we are more focused on exerting professionalism. From reading about my kickstarter and what it is all about, my audience will learn that I am an ambitious person and willing to do anything positive to expand something that I am passionate about. I am pretty sure that my audience will not enjoy this project if they are not just as ambitious and crazy about what they love and want to do with their lives. My audience and I will have shared beliefs when it comes to working hard for what you want, not shooting down others dreams, and encouraging others to gain an open mind. My purpose in addressing this audience is to allow them to not be afraid to share what they love, be willing to encourage others, and just expressing their talents to gain support. This is an appropriate audience because this audience will have to be able to listen with an open mind, which is the role I assign to the audience. The role that I assume for the audience is that they will listen but not catch all that there is to know. As a writer I will have to have a jovial and exciting tone but I have to give off a sense that I do mean business. Because I am writing towards a younger and diverse crowd my diction will have to be understandable and straight to the point because this generation does not do much reading. |
Rhetorical Ad "free-write"The rhetorical advertisement that I chose to do for Project 1 is an Ad that was created by the World Wild Life Fund of Belgium, in June 2004 called “The Earth Melting”. This international advertisement is an image of our planet Earth melting on top of an ice cream cone, essentially promoting all humans around the world to become more aware of global warming. The ethos in this ad is that the World Wild Life Fund is an organization that has been promoting global warming and its affect on not only humans, but mainly the animals of wildlife since the 1960s. The WWF organization is therefore credible to promote this message because they have realized over many years that global warming is increasing, and if we do not take note then the Earth melting will be the end result. The pathos in this ad is our Earth melting. This advertisement touches on the values and beliefs of every human because this is the planet that we live on and without it, there is no longer life for us. Also, since the WWF’s main focus is on the wildlife, they want the audience to think beyond themselves, which is referring to our animals and any other form of life besides ourselves. Meaning that not only will you lose life but everything around you as well. The logos in this ad is that many people are aware of global warming but not all people know what it could possibly do to the Earth, so the image on the advertisement illustrates this greatly. This ad has kairos because issues are growing around our World everyday dealing with global warming and the good of the Earth, so this would cause more people to become involved. A logical fallacy in this ad would be that people would not believe that the Earth is really melting.
The warrant of my ad is you shouldn’t let your Planet suffer. The claim of the argument would be to become aware of global warming. The backing would be evidence that temperature is increasing which is causing global warming. The ground of the argument is that if you are not aware then the Planet will melt. The rebuttal of this ad is that the Earth cannot completely melt because it isn’t made of completely ice. 150 Word Sentence! My name is Jasmine Blunt, I am a freshman in college and also a student athlete; when people ask me what exactly I want to do for my career, it is always somewhat difficult for me to explain, and this is because I am not so sure about what I want do; because my major is mass communications with a specialization in media production it can get really crazy, especially because there are a number of things that I could do with this degree, such as: become a producer, director, script writer, broadcaster, journalist, or maybe even teach communications at a high school or university but we will discuss that in another life; meaning that I doubt the last option will happen because I tend to get annoyed by people very easily; not saying that I don’t love kids, I just rather work with them when they are more mature.
Rhetorical Ad. Analysis Rough DraftOver the years of 2000, there has been much controversy and protesting about the safety of our Earth. People all over the world have ran across an advertisement promoting awareness of either global warming, recycling, climate change, or any popular issue concerning the Earth’s environment. One of the most popular companies that stand for the value of Earth is the World Wild Life Foundation. This company was founded in the 1960s and has been very effective ever since. Their main focus is to grab the attention of all humans in attempt to make them more mindful of the planet they live on and also its wildlife. However, if it were not for their amazingly graphic advertisements, the WWF organization would not be as well-known as they are today. In the advertisement created by the World Wild Life Fund of Belgium, in June 2004 called “The Earth Melting”, they caught many people’s attention. This international advertisement is an image of our planet Earth melting on top of an ice cream cone with a message at the bottom stating, "The first signs of global warming are now clearly visible. We urgently need to limit greenhouse gas emissions." Essentially persuading all humans around the world to become more aware of global warming or the planet will melt. The WWF foundation uses many rhetorical devices to convey their message. They used Aristotle’s three types of appeals to connect with their audience. The ethos in this ad is that the World Wild Life Fund is an organization that has been promoting global warming and its effect on not only humans, but mainly the animals of wildlife since the late 1900s. The WWF organization is therefore credible to promote this message because they have realized over many years that global warming is increasing. And because of their credibility the audience will become more attentive of the advertisement. The use of pathos in this ad is “our” Earth melting. This advertisement touches on the values and beliefs of every human because this is the planet that we live on and without it, there is no longer life for us. Also, since the WWF’s main focus is on the wildlife, they want the audience to think beyond themselves, which is referring to our animals and any other form of life besides ourselves. They want people to realize that not only will you lose life but everything around you as well. The advertisers also use the ice cream cone to give an example of how a hot summer day melts your ice cream, and if you did not lick it fast enough it would continue to melt. This example sent the message that we need to save our Earth before it is too late. Logos is used in this ad by implying that many people are aware of global warming but not all people know what it could possibly do to the Earth. Although the advertiser’s use of evidence is not very effective because some of the audience may or may not believe that the world is overheating, the image illustrates to the audience that this is possible. Also, the message at the bottom of the poster goes to support the illustration. It gives the audience a logical reason as to why we should become more aware of global warming. This advertisement also uses kairos. Issues are growing around our World everyday dealing with global warming and the good of the Earth, and more and more people are starting to become involved. The WWF organization promotes a growing trend in their advertisement which will allow the people that do support their claim to encourage more people to pay attention. Not only do the appeals and kairos help convey their message but with the use of colors, lighting, and position, the presentation of the ad is also very beneficial. The background of the poster helps bring more focus to the actual ice cream cone. It is really dark blue or black around the edges and gets lighter as it moves toward the center, which allows the cone to stand out. Also, the cone is very noticeable because the dark color contrast with the light blue of the earth in the ice cream and the light brown tone of the cone. The contrast of the colors will allow the ad to catch the viewer’s eye, bringing them to the focus and the message of the ad. The lighting helps to grab the audience’s attention also. The extra lighting around the ice cream cone draws your eyes directly to the center of the advertisement. The positioning of the cone also helps the WWF organization promote putting a stop to global warming. Because it is in the center of the ad, it says that this problem is very important and should have more attention that it does. And we refer to the things that are most important to us being the center of our lives. The advertisement only hold one specific logical fallacy, which is the fallacy of false cause. This advertisements has the fallacy of false cause because it says that the Earth will completely melt if we do not take care of it. However, the Earth is not only made up of glaciers but land as well. The WWF organization could have made a more effective message if they would have maybe had an illustration showing that the Earth will soon drown in its own bodies of water. This will then make its viewers question their credibility over the subject presented. The warrant of this ad is that you shouldn’t let your Planet suffer. The overall significance of this advertisement is valid. Global warming is an issue that we should all learn about and try to put an end to. Movie Review Rough Draft In life we make decisions everyday. We have our easier decisions, such as going to school or staying home, staying in or going to that crazy house party, or cleaning our room when we can simply be lazy for the day. However, one of the hardest decision I think a person could ever make is what film they should watch on a movie night. Out of all the movie genres, I believe that everyone loves a romantic-comedy. These are the movies that center on ideals such as true love but have a humorous plot-line with obstacles that land them in a happily ever after.
In the movie Think Like A Man, director Tim Story who brought you Taxi, Barbershop, and Fantastic Four, brings his viewers a romantic yet extremely funny film to the big screen. Story creates a romantic-comedy that depicts what happens when ladies get a hold of comedian and radio host Steve Harvey’s best-seller, Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man: What Men Really Think About Love, Relationships, Intimacy, and Commitment. By the title you can see that this novel was written specifically for women that are seeking knowledge about how men truly think when it comes to love. In this movie we are to believe that the women in the film have bought the book and began to live their lives according to it. However, the plot twist arrives when the men in their lives discover they have been secretly reading, which stirs them to study it for themselves. Now the men are aware of the ladies plans to figure them out. Think Like A Man is set in Los Angeles, California, which fits the theme of the movie perfectly. The characters are young, adventurous, dating and fit for the fast lifestyle, which also contributes to the main focus of the film. In the beginning of the movie Steve Harvey introduces his book on a talk show, and continues to appear throughout the film giving advice straight to the audience. The film takes the book and breaks it down into different categories, such as "The Mama's Boy" vs. "The Single Mom", "The Non-Committer" vs. "The Girl Who Wants the Ring", "The Dreamer" vs. "The Woman Who Is Her Own Man", and "The Player" vs. "The 90 Day Rule Girl". It is funny to see how each character play these contradicting roles with his or her partner. The cast play these roles superbly. The leading roles are Terrence J, Michael Ealy, Jerry Ferrara, Romany Malco, Kevin Hart, Taraji P. Henson, Regina Hall, Gabrielle Union, and Meagan Good. My favorite character is Cedric (Kevin Hart), who plays the odd ball of the love circle as “The Happier Divorced Guy”. While the ladies are stuck on figuring out the rules in the book and the men are studying what there is to know, Cedric is enjoying life. “He spends most of his time in so-called gentleman's clubs, having 30-minute relationships that all have happy endings, and it's hard to argue he isn't happy” (http://www.rogerebert.com/). Plus, Kevin Hart (Little Fockers) is one of the funniest individuals ever and it is almost impossible to not enjoy a movie with him in it. Another great asset of the movie would have to be the soundtrack. Each song chosen by Christopher Lennertz set the mood for its scene just right. Most of the special effects in the movie were visual. The ladies were appealing to the eye and desirable through their flawless makeup, manicured hair, and business attire. This made them appealing to the men yet intimidating because they all seemed to have control. This movie is different from most romantic-comedies because it is setup similar to a sitcom which are becoming more popular in the entertainment industry today. Although this was a hilarious picture, the downfall of the movie would have to be how the book was taken so serious. The characters in the movie were actually naïve enough to live their lives by Steve Harvey’s exact words, however, we know in real life that people are going to do what they please no matter what you tell them. This movie has its laughs but will not have you dying laughing. Unlike Tim Story, director Will Gluck (Easy A) creates a more realistic storyline asking whether it is possible to have sexual relations without falling in love. Friends With Benefits, starring Mila Kunis (Black Swan) and Justin Timberlake (The Social Network) tells the story of how friendship is all about helping each other in times of need. Even if it involves doing intimate relationship things when you are in the mood. But do not forget about no strings attached. We all think of this as being easy but Gluck shows just how complicated this can be. The movie is set in New York, where Jamie Rellis (Kunis) is a head hunter of GQ Magazine and Dylan Harper (Timberlake) is an art director from Los Angeles who is being offered a job position at GQ. Meanwhile, both are going through a heartbreak. Dylan is stuck on Hollywood love stories while Jamie wants to someday find her Prince Charming. He ends up accepting the job and because they are coincidently going through the same things, this gives them even more of a reason to bond outside of the workplace. They go on a dinner date to celebrate his big move, and one date leads to many more. They begin to share their relationship problems, funny stories, and typical friend conversations. We all know that friends are the ones that are supposed to help you move on after a bad break up and this is exactly what they do for one another. However, they do not take the appropriate route when trying to help friends get over a past relationship, which leads to them labeling their friendship as “no strings attached”. Meaning they are to not catch emotional feelings for one another, no matter what activities they take part in (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/). However, the plot twist occurs when they soon realize that the best intimate relationships start off as good friendships. The film is somewhat similar to Ashton Kutcher’s No Strings Attached but what makes them so different is how the chemistry between Kunis and Timberlake is smooth, perfect, and just hilarious. They play these roles the best way possible showing that something we all think is so simple, is not easy at all. My favorite scene in the movie is when both characters reenact a 90s baby jam, “Jump” by Kris Kross. This scene shows how much of a perfect match they are for one another even though the plan is to avoid that from ever happening. Similar to Think Like A Man, the special effects are also visual. However, the characters have a more urban style and are not so focused on sophistication. This contributes to the New York setting of the movie. Also, the soundtrack consist of more pop and retro-jams, which fits the personality of the characters and scenes in the movie. Friends With Benefits did a great job showing how not to fall for the cliché movie love story. Of course no movie is perfect. The biggest issue of the film was including unnecessary characters, the film moves well enough on its own and it was as if the screenwriters did not have enough confidence as the audience did in the leading characters. Despite the added dimensions in the film, Friends With Benefits was an amazingly hilarious movie to watch. Although Friends With Benefits is quite hilarious, Bridesmaids is the best romantic-comedy to watch no matter how you are feeling. The incredible Paul Feig, who directed The Heat, brings yet another priceless film. Feig allows his audience to witness a group of women who are just as “unbehaved” as the men in The Hangover (http://www.rogerebert.com/). The film is set in Milwakuee, Wisconsin which allows you to focus even more on the great storyline of the movie. Annie Walker (Kristen Wiig) is a thirty year old woman, who’s bakery just shut down, rooms with an annoying British brother and sister, and whose best friend, Lillian (Maya Rudolph), is getting married. Annie was chosen to be her friend’s maid of honor until she meets her rival Helen (Rose Byrne), the trophy wife of the groom’s boss. And this starts nothing but trouble. Helen is so use to getting everything she wants, and does not know how it feels to not be in charge which makes Annie feel as though she is trying to steal her spot light. When in reality Helen does not get that she is not the one in charge of the wedding. One thing that stands out the most about the movie is that it is not your typical “Chick Flick”. It offers a male-seeming dimension that most of the romantic comedies about engagements and weddings do not have. The movie is more centered on the relationship of that the women have with each other, more so than with the men. The movie also does a good job of keeping all the members of the bridal party in action. Which includes Rita (Wendi McLendon-Covey), who is a mother of three teenage songs, Ted (Jon Hamm), who ends up becoming Annie’s lover and friend, and the hilarious Megan (Melissa McCarthy), who is the positive person that kind of keeps everyone together. My favorite scene from the movie is when they take off to Vegas for the Bachelorette party. Helen of course rides in first class with the bride, while Annie is stuck in coach. Annie arrived with a headache so Helen decides to “help” by giving her some medicine that only makes things worse and more hilarious. Annie unfortunately lands on “cloud 9”, she makes her way to first class to go pick on Helen as well as the flight attendants. This scene is only one of the craziest scenes in the movie, and it only gets better. Compared to Think Like A Man and Friends With Benefits, this movie could easily be relatable. We all have friends that have other friends besides us, and when we are all together there is always some conflict bound to happen dealing with competition. Not an argument exactly, but it could be who has the best memories, the most things in common, knows more about the mutual friend, etc. And it is something we all can laugh at because it has most likely happened to us before. Also, the soundtrack chosen by Michael Andrews, was not as fitting as the soundtrack to Think Like A Man, but the songs did fit most of the scenes. Along with the previous films discussed, visual effects were most prominent in the film. You could tell the personality of the characters by the way that they were dressed, which made the movie even more enjoyable. There was never a dull moment in this picture. Although I think that Feig did a wonderful job with this film, there was one main issue. This issue is that the language was somewhat vulgar. I think that on some scenes of the movie he could have made other characters seem just as sophisticated as Helen. All in all, I enjoyed this movie, and always will. |
